How Nasty Are You?

My Logo

I’ve been thinking about this blog post for a while now. I even tried (note the word ‘tried’!) to make a video about it, but having spent ten minutes chatting away to the camera, when I came to upload it, it had just vanished into cyberspace or somewhere!

So here’s my second attempt – no cameras about so I should be okay haha.

DID you know that if you use conventional cosmetics on a daily basis, you can absorb almost FIVE pounds of chemicals & toxins into your body each year?

Would you wash your face, body, or hair with engine de-greaser?

I thought not – and yet if you are still using products containing SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) that’s exactly what you are doing!

SLS was first used as an engine de-greaser during World War 2 because the chemical was abrasive & corrosive enough to remove the toughest oils & dirt. It was then brought to the United States after the war & until the 1950’s was used in the automotive industry in the product, GUNK, which is still around today.

Large corporations then realised that SLS is an effective foaming agent, and costs pennies to produce.

This is why it is still prevalent in cleaners and household products BUT also in many personal products like shampoos, scalp treatments, hair colour, body washes, shower gels, and toothpaste among others.

Here are a few reasons to check your products & avoid it:

  • Follicular damage is a common side effect of prolonged sulfate use & can lead to hair loss.
  • Sensitive skin can be irritated by sulfates, causing redness, dryness & itching – especially the scalp.
  • There are some toxic byproducts of manufacturing SLS: 1, 4-dioxane, ethylene oxide, and nitrosamines – all known carcinogens.

Finally here is a more comprehensive list of products that may contain SLS:

  • Soaps
  • Shampoo
  • Bubble Bath
  • Toothpaste
  • Washing Up Liquid
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Stain Remover
  • Carpet Cleaner
  • Fabric Glue
  • Body Wash
  • Shaving Cream
  • Mascara
  • Mouthwash
  • Skin Cleanser
  • Skin Lotion
  • Moisturiser
  • Sun Screen.

If you are looking for safe, natural alternatives I can highly recommend the shampoo bars I sell at http://www.skinkiss.org.uk.

FS10

FS11

These are SLS-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free, palm oil-free, and plastic-free AND just £2.75 each.

I am definitely a convert; My hair is very long & fine and prone to be greasy. I used to need to wash it every other day.

Not any more – since swapping to these shampoo bars I can now go 3-4 days between washes if I need to. Plus I no longer need conditioner either. Win, win!
